The Beast or the Messy Bun

"The Beast" is what I call my hair. It must be tamed every morning after I have slept on it. A lot of people think bedhead is kind of endearing. It can be, on some people.

Friends, when Bonnie has bedhead....it is like nothing you have ever seen. We aren't talking tousled or slightly unkempt....it is straight-up SMASHED TO MY HEAD. And tangled...oh so very tangled.

So it's morning and my roots are smashed to my head while the ends are tangled up in some horrifying wasp nest. It's time to get ready for some epic preschool teaching. It's time to walk the dog and grab some coffee for the drive.
It's time to tame the Beast.

It's time for the messy bun.

I've been perfecting my messy bun for years now. It changes based on my haircut, but the fundamentals are the same. Pull hair up as far as you like....twist it around until you have a knob....wrap a soft elastic band around that knob....then loosen it up all the pieces that are left sticking up. Twist, rearrange, and put some of those piece back in the elastic until you like the result. Don't be afraid to add some volume and texture.

My latest alteration to the process is a tip from the decade of my childhood...the 80s. Flip head over, brush the roots, and wa-la! Roots are unstuck from my head. (Brush it before putting it up...obviously) I also put my fingers through the roots and loosen them from the elastic band a bit until I'm happy with the results.
Don't forget to spray a little water on the front hair and blow dry with a brush! Normally my bangs are ridiculous in the morning. Ridiculous as in flattened to my head and sticking in every direction.

Yes, I know the border is missing. Details...

You can read on my photography blog about my favorite hair products, but sometimes I like to keep it simple with a little baby powder. This is the corn starch type. I don't use it every day as it sometimes makes my scalp a little dry, but it's great for getting excess oil out of the roots and unsticking them from my noggin.
(I'm not a hair stylist, or a dermatologist..so...you know...use common sense when you try stuff on your head!)

I might get brave and do a video tutorial about my version of the messy bun...but honestly after the self-portrait Weird Outfits debacle I should probably stick to grainy Iphone photos for the time being.

Calm Down!

Bonnie

  1. A little jealous of not having to wash the hair every day. Even when it was longer, I had to. Your messy bun is cute to be sure. Feeling calmer already
